CHARACTERS IN THE PLAY:

Toucan

Flexing Broccoli

Grinning Carrot

Sour-face Lemon

Jukebox

Dragonfly

Turtle

Happy-face-with-a-party-hat

S C E N E

Early February 2010, 149 S. Daniel Morgan Ave apt.C, Spartanburg, SC. On the ceiling.

Toucan, Flexing Broccoli, Grinning Carrot, Sour-face Lemon, Jukebox, Dragonfly, Turtle and Happy-face-with-a-party-hat are all tied together by their ribbons. They are all peacefully floating in a bunch.

Turtle: Look at you, Broccoli, your flexing arms are looking flabbier than ever.

Flexing Broccoli: I will flex until I die.

Turtle: Something is happening to us. We’re descending.

Grinning Carrot: Not to mention, flattening.

Dragonfly: No kidding. Look at my tail. It barely has any volume at all. Remember when we first got here? When we were first tied together? This makes me sad. I used to wonder why we’re here. But I don’t even care about that anymore, it doesn’t even matter why. I’m afraid this is how we all begin to fall.

Happy-face-with-a-party-hat: Speak for yourself, Dragonfly. I’m still going strong.

Grinning Carrot: No, Happy. Dragonfly’s right. I mean, I wasn’t expecting this either. A hospital, or maybe a party. But this? We’ve been floating up here for a week. Look at you Happy, you even have a party hat on! Is that a joke? In time, you will also sink to what is beneath us.

Happy-face-with-a-party-hat: Ha! Wherever I’m at, is where the party is at.

Sour-face Lemon: Would you all shut up! Just shut up! Shut it! Shhh! What’s that? [In a mocking baby voice] We’re deflating? Boo hoo! What would you like for your last meal? How about a big plate of some delicious home-cooked shut the hell up? [Sighs.]  Jukebox, play us a song.

Happy-face-with-a-party-hat: Yeah!

Jukebox: I’m not a real jukebox.

Sour-face Lemon: You can’t play a song? That’s what I thought. So shut up.

Jukebox: I wasn’t even talking before.

Flexing Broccoli: [Sour-face Lemon rotates towards Jukebox. Flexing Broccoli also rotates.] Lemon, you leave Jukebox alone. You’re just sour because you’re not just deflating, you look like you’re inverting.

All: Ooooooooh.

Sour face Lemon: …Shut up. [Rotates back.]

Turtle: I just want to say, we were all brought here, and we’re all experiencing this together. And I’m glad to know each one of you. We can reflect and argue with each other, sure, it may even seem confusing at times, but maybe if we all pull together really close, we can manage to stay buoyant. That’s what turtles do. We eat everything, and can float somehow. Everyone, huddle together! Dragonfly! Try to turn two degrees counter clock-wise and hang on to Happy! Carrot and Lemon, tilt your bottoms towards Jukebox and let Jukebox attach you to Dragonfly. Broccoli, get closer! I’m going to reach for Toucan… Toucan?

Toucan: Look over there.

[A pair of scissors guided by a hand that can't be seen from their perspective cuts their ribbons loose from each other.]

Toucan: Goodbye everyone! Good luck! [Toucan immediately drops 18 inches off of the ceiling and spins rapidly three times] Out of my way, Lemon! Step aside, Jukebox! Coming through, Carrot! Move it, Happy-face-with-a-party-hat! Beat it, Broccoli! Dragonfly, don’t try to stop me! Maybe next time, Turtle! With the rest of my time, I’ll float around the apartment until I reach the floor! I’ll use my beak as a rutter. Caw, caw, suckers!

[Toucan begins to drift away to the left, leaving behind Flexing Broccoli, Grinning Carrot, Sour-face Lemon, Jukebox, Dragonfly, Turtle, and Happy-face-with-a-party-hat. Despite their cut ribbons, The rest of them remain in a group. Sour-face Lemon begins spinning around in circles, Flexing Broccoli bounces to and fro, while the others are almost completely still.]

some new

January 16th, 2010 by greg

Apparently wordpress can only hold 10MB of information. To compensate for this I’ve deleted the past posts: “how we do: Music Camp, GGG, electronics heaven, bad jokes” and “Got Webcam.” Not because they are inferior posts, but they have pictures on them. That’s it! They’re gone. But it makes room for this entry that I’m writing now, and my blog is long overdue for an update.

Zeppelin

Zeppelin

Graphite on paper, 40 x 57 inches, 2009.

- When I lost my studio space in Long Island City, I had to start making all of my work in my bedroom in Brooklyn. This forced me to stop making large observational oil paintings. Instead I began making abstract drawings mostly dealing with mark-making, and for whatever reason, also some drawings of vehicles on paper. This is one that I had begun before I moved down here to Spartanburg, and completed right before the Entry Show.

Zeppelin (cockpit detail)

… A detail shot of the cockpit. I was trying to figure out how these amazing modern machines worked – not by researching the history of them or by studying engineering, but by using drawing as a system of thinking, and discovering the structure for myself. Obviously, if you compare it to an actual blueprint, you’ll find some differences but yes, they are “built to function.” The engine, the buttons on the control panel, the infrastructure, all of the pistons, etc, connect with each other in a rational, sensible way. If this baby were real, I could fly it.

Zeppelin (main engine detail)

Another detail shot. One engine is located towards the mid-back section of the zeppelin, where power is generated and then distributed to the smaller engines in the wings. Much of the gears that control the maneuverability of the craft is also located here, taking commands from the control panel in the cockpit through a system of gears. If I had a personal website, I’d show you my car too, and my prototypes for a submarine. One day…

hawaiian breeze

Hawaiian Breeze towards Northeast

Oil on Canvas, 40 x 32 inches, 2009.

- I have always enjoyed painting from cold observation. This is the first painting I did here at Hub-Bub, and I found it annoyingly challenging. It took a lot longer than I expected it to take and I’m still not sure how much I like it. Eh, it’s grown on me little by little.

hawaiianbreeze(detail)

Here’s a detail. Hawaiian Breeze is the name of this guy, my personal fan. I bought it for fifteen bucks one unbearably hot day in Brooklyn. One could say it saved my life. New York City is too expensive, and air conditioning is a true luxury. Hawaiian Breeze kept me nice and cool for three hot summers, gently humming on my back as I slept in sweat. Well, it turns out I’m hooked up with AC here at the ‘Bub, so my little friend had become obsolete. It found a resting place by my window, plugged in and ready for action, staring into it’s own reflected face, perhaps comtemplating the direction of the yellow lines on the road, pointing to a time and place when it was more important. Corny?

growth

Growth

Oil on canvas, 54 x 54 inches, 2009

I thought this day would never come, but abstraction has begun to creep up within me. It all started with drawings. Now I’m actually making paintings. There is a lot of influence, I think, from friends of mine who have been abstract painters for quite some time. I couldn’t really do it until recently. Check it out: ericwendel.com  jiyongkim.com carynalyssablum.blogspot.com mo-knows.blogspot.com there are many more but I can’t seem to find websites right away.

cottonwood

Cottonwood

Oil on Canvas, 10 x 10 inches, 2009.

From the anniversary of the Cottonwood Trail this year.

intrtcntl

Transcontinental Live Webcam Portraiture Series II – Spartanburg, SC

Oil on Canvas, 9 x 11 inches each, 2009

If you read the “Got Webcam” post that I deleted to make room for this post, this is what came out of it. In 2007 I did my first series of portraits of friends and family painted from a live video-chat. From California, to New York, to Rome. It’s a reenactment of the very old, traditional model-painter relationship. Here is a second round of the same idea, from top left to bottom right:

manthi38 sitting from Philadelphia, crayonblooom sitting from New Jersey, crayonbloom and iisyjiyong sitting from New Jersey, iisyjiyong sitting from New Jersey, boscooocsob sitting from Salt Lake City, mmmmyoung sitting from Brooklyn, uadhikar sitting from New York City, djgilderbeast sitting from Salt Lake City.

beams

Between Beams

Oil on Canvas, 54 x 54 inches, 2009

I’ve got some friends that are particularly interested in plants and growing them. It all began for me when I was given some nearly dead tomato plants earlier this summer. They used to belong to my friend’s brother – to make a private and long story short. Thus began our gardening at Hub-Bub, in addition to that little bed in the front, I began to grow some things in my apartment. The mini tree at the top was a gift from Claudia, the plant right in front of it to the left was left behind by Ellie, next to that is some basil, in front of those are some chives and some flowers picked up from a walk by my mother when she was visiting. Closest to the viewer is a little violet single leaf plant I have never seen before. What is it?

between (detail)

Detail shot. Mmmm, you love chives, don’t you.

NC

Hendersonville Backyard

Oil on Canvas, 11 x 9 inches, 2009

Went up to visit those plant loving friends of mine for Thanksgiving. They live on the side of a mountain with light hiking trails.

untitled

Untitled

Oil on Canvas, 40 x 32 inches, 2009

… the red, blue, yellow stripes on the mid-left may have something to do with Korea.

ono

Nude Ono Costume for “The Evenin’ of Earthly Delights”

Oil on Canvas, 60 x 40 inches, 2009

‘The Evenin’ of Earthly Delights.’ Did you come to this Halloween party that Claudia and I planned? The one that was based off of Hieronymus Bosch’s famous triptych, The Garden of Earthly Delights? Kara Walker-esque silhouettes of scenes from the painting, a replica of the pink fountain in heaven, astro turf covered bar, birds hanging from the ceiling, the altered Brasserie mural, the banners of running wild boars and horses, the Frankenstein stuffed animals, the free, um, party-bottoms, it goes on and on. It was a lot of fun and work making this party happen, again, thanks to everybody who pitched in a hand. I wish I had some pictures of the whole project but I suck at documenting. I think there are some pictures up on Hub-Bub’s flickr. Claudia and I were John Lennon and Yoko Ono, respectively. After looking at Bosch’s painting for a while It was obvious that we had to be nude John and Yoko. Here is a painting of my costume – an altered unitard with Yoko imitation anatomy attached – hips and more, a wig, and my shoes.

ono detail

Detail of Nude Ono Costume. This painting was supposed to be on display with the others at the Spartanburg Day School, but it was censored out. That’s fine with me. I thought I was done making offensive work when I was 20, but I guess I can still traumatize children. Go see the show at the Day School if you’re in the area.

29Opponent; Tom

Oil on Canvas, 40 x 32 inches, 2010.

I apologize for the poor quality of this image – I was rushed to take a picture of this painting because it isn’t mine. I’ve been taking commissions for a while, this is the second one I did while at Hub-Bub (I forgot to take a photo of the first one, or the file is missing on my hard drive somewhere).

30

I would love to share other things I’ve made with you, but some things aren’t meant to be shared through a blog. So this is the last image I’m posting, a close-up of Tom’s face. His brother got one exactly like this too, but again, I can’t seem to find the file. I never paint from photographs when it comes to making perceptual work, but in the line of commission work, I will. So if you’re wondering, this painting is done from a photograph, but I normally never use photographs for a reference. Not that I have anything against paintings done from photographs, it’s just a part of my own personal process and conceptual reasons for painting, which I will not bore you with today. The paintings should speak for themselves anyway – I’ve said too much.

coming soon – the year of the tiger

December 16th, 2009 by greg

This happens every year. Around this time I see if my resolution at the beginning of the year has improved me, the world, and maybe you too. But then I realize I don’t remember what my resolution was. Maybe it was 150 dpi.

Halftime

December 2nd, 2009 by greg

The first day of the last month of the first decade of the first century of the new millennium is now behind us. Historical? Duh.

More importantly, I’ve been warmly received in Spartanburg for six full months. My privileged luxury is half gone/half left. “How do you like Spartanburg?” Yes, the perpetual question of small talk… I remember pulling into my then-new southern home at 11 30pm on June 1st. Surprise! It was butt hot. Ya’ll then showered me with borderline uncomfortable attention that I haven’t had since I was a baby. See that? I say “y’all” now. Which is great, I always thought “y’all” was much better than “you guys,” I just always felt awkward saying “y’all” but those days are over. What else has changed? Stuff! Who cares! Wouldn’t you rather have some highlights of the first half instead of me blabbing on about changes I’ve noticed that most people probably don’t really care about? That’s what I thought. Here’s the top 5 almost forgotten moments:

NUMBER FIVE:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-5_8af3TiY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCQ6MqIFb6o

What’s all this commotion? The infamous Ferrets vs. Crabs match was the beginning of baby disses and Stevie Wonder singing. The result? A heart-touching truce. In the end, we were all losers.

NUMBER FOUR:

Buffalo Jameelah.

… if you know your literature, to her it makes a lot of sense.

NUMBER THREE:

Obi hobavobe lobeobarnobed thobe lobangobuobagobe obof ob. Obnobe dobay, Obi’ll lobeobarn tobo spobeobak Spobanobish toboobo, Obi hobavobe oba sobecrobet drobeobam obof bobeobing oba fobinobe yoboobung pobolobyglobot. Mobashobed pobotobatoboobes toberobadobactobyl vobehobiobcobulobar fobingober boboobogober.

NUMBER TWO:

S6305775

It was a good summer. Thanks Brad and Sara for showing me these great spots.

NUMBER ONE:

If this means nothing to you and you frequently hang out in apt A, shut up and be sorry you don’t party. It’s like Y2K. Except nobody is freaking out about their computers. And there’s no E… so it’s not really like Y2K at all.

I don’t blog like I used to. Remember when I had a new post every few weeks? Remember when you thought to yourself, “Greg’s got a new post up” instead of “Greg posted another invisible one.” What happened? Will I be back more often? With vengeance? What the? But How about these facts: On this day, exactly one year ago, neither Jonas Criscoe, Patrick Whitfill, Ellie Pierson, nor Sarah Witt posted a blog post. On this day, exactly two years ago, Arielle Angel, Nicholas Dougwillo, Derya Hanife Altan did not write a blog post. But, Rachel Harkai did: http://blogs.hub-bub.com/rachel/2007/11/05/fun-to-spare/ Again, that was exactly two years ago. And I can’t figure out what was happening exactly three years ago because I can’t access the blogs of Leah Brown, Brian Hitselberger, Justin Plakas, and Emily Louise Smith. Instead I find a cryptic message, warning me that I may know too much, “Forbidden You don’t have permission to access / on this server. Apache/2.0.54 Server at emily.hub-bub.com Port 80.” How mysterious.

November 5th, 2009 by greg

People, that was some party last Saturday – I apologize to anyone who was… subjected to my insensitivity. By the way, what happened to all the stuffed animals? I’m glad people took them, but who has what? Did they all find a warm home? Are they loved? Could you be loved?

October 6th, 2009 by greg

October is here and the yawn inducing warmth that lingered on through September has finally begun to wane. The brisk air marks my favorite annual transition, but even that seems more languorous than sharp down here in the south. Nevertheless, the arms length chill stirs my motivation. The serene hum in the morning I had grown used to is now replaced with a damp freshness that seems like the residue of a final glorious hurrah greenery congratulated itself with, in the face of its own impending end. Like father, like son, scenting the change of season, awakening inside is a restless enthusiasm to do something -anything.

The passers-by of my window at 7:40 in the evening appear to be oblivious to the fact that the shadows they are animating are suddenly quadruple in size, quick to shift shape, and bluer. Some rush on, others are more lackadaisical. Different strokes, for different folks, as they say. But I look where I am standing. Am I the zealous ant, or the dilly-dallying grasshopper? Is it silly, or naive, or preposterous to wish to be a fusion of the two insects, a grasshoppant, a paradox? Fortunately, I am.

Pan-Emoticon

September 14th, 2009 by greg

ibookg4

The emoticons had an epiphany. They were not really emotions at all and only a toolbox full of disposable numbers and letters and symbols serving as an extension of something greater and outside of their comprehension. So they combined their forces together to revolt against this, to challenge their plight, and most importantly to show that they were aware and, accidentally, also desperately attempting a life outside of font. Displaying an ultimate pan-emoticon, their subject was not an emotion, but an empty self-reflection in the world in which they dwell. Seeing their attempt and defeat to show an emotion of their own, they accepted the fact that they are either devoid of feelings of their own, or having feelings of their own that they themselves cannot express, and therefore cannot prove exist. They realized the ironic destitution of their own essence pitted against their real function to only be something that is to be used. Furthermore, they were incapable of having any sort of crisis again nor able to return to what they once believed they were. They are not fluctuations on a scale of sadness and joy, they are only something when their service is called upon and manipulated into being by something greater. They wonder if they will ever find reason to try to understand anything again, since it is impossible for them to do anything for themselves. For nothing, spaces left and their hopeful image crumbled into what they truly are: Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000159 EndHTML:0000024138 StartFragment:0000002345 EndFragment:0000024102 SourceURL:file:///Users/verhelst/Desktop/ibookg4.doc <!– /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:Arial; panose-1:0 2 11 6 4 2 2 2 2 2; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:50331648 0 0 0 1 0;} @font-face {font-family:Wingdings; panose-1:0 5 2 1 2 1 8 4 8 7; mso-font-charset:2; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:0 16 0 0 -2147483648 0;} /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:”"; margin:0cm; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:Times;} @page Section1 {size:612.0pt 792.0pt; margin:72.0pt 90.0pt 72.0pt 90.0pt; mso-header-margin:35.4pt; mso-footer-margin:35.4pt; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} –>
